Joint replacement surgery is a surgical procedure to replace the dysfunctional joint of the body is replaced with artificial replacements. These artificial replacements are called prosthesis and are designed to duplicate the movement of the joints.
Joint replacement surgeries are opted when there are symptoms and diagnosis that lead to a conclusion that the joint id totally dysfunctional. The most common joints that are replaced are replaced are hips, knees, ankles, wrists, shoulders, and elbows. Joint replacement is also performed on finger joints.
Joint replacement is needed when the other procedures to cure the joint dysfunction are not benefiting the patient or the joint itself is damaged enough to do any regular or normal functionality. The causes of a dysfunctional joint could be a due to joint injury causing total bone damage or diseases like Arthritis in which the bone health deteriorates over time.
The procedure varies for different joints.
The common procedure involves various tests that could include ECG, urine tests, hematology and blood tests. X-rays of the affected joint, implant design selecting and size-matching to the x-ray images are all part of pre surgery procedure.
The patient is hospitalized for the surgery. The replacement might require more than one surgeries depending upon various conditions like joint which are replaced, age of patient, number of joints to be replaced, physical condition of patients and many more.
The full recovery after the procedure takes weeks and depends totally on patient’s condition. Typically for every joint, a sling or belt is tied to immobilize the joints to let the surgery injury heal. Extreme care, proper medication and regular follow-ups should not be avoided.
Guided physiotherapy generally follows the surgery. It consists of various weight and stretching exercises. It helps in regaining the full range motion by strengthening the joint muscles
